207-Year-Old Church In Piddig, Ilocos Norte Ready for Restoration

PIDDIG, Ilocos Norte – The Saint Anne Catholic Church, one of the century-old-churches in Ilocos Norte may soon open its doors again after decommissioned for two years.

The church was declared unfit for occupancy from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and attested by Bishop Renato Mayugba of the Diocese of Laoag on September 2014.

In history, St. Anne parish was founded by the Augustinian friars in 1810. During the Philippine-American War, Filipino guerrillas used the church as a base to repel American attacks.

During an earthquake on March 19, 1932, the top section of the bell tower was toppled, but this was repaired.

In the earlier days of the year 2014, an excavation happened in-front of the altar located at the middle isle wherein rumor says it has gold and was unearthed by a parishioner.

Guillen Administration then built a temporary house of worship at the eastern part of the main church — to continue the solemnity of the mass offered by the parishioners of the town.

Meanwhile on restoration, the NCAA funded 50 million pesos as requested by Ilocos Norte First District Congressman Rodolfo Fariñas and it will formally start this month of October 2017.
